![]() The Cats had the worst red-zone touchdown percentage in the league, finding the end zone on only 25 on 47 trips (53.2%).Īfter a 26-13 victory over Louisville in the regular-season finale, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops said he needed to "reflect" on tough decisions in order to keep the program moving forward. Kentucky was even worse in SEC play, failing to top 27 points in any of its eight games while being held to 19, 14, and 21 in swing-game losses to Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. The Wildcats slipped to 105th nationally in scoring offense (22.1) and 107th in total offense (336.3 ypg) despite the return of star quarterback Will Levis, the SEC's leading returning rusher in Chris Rodriguez Jr., and an influx of young talent at wide receiver and tight end. He is the second staff member to be removed, following Monday's news that running backs coach/co-special teams coordinator John Settle had been fired. Kentucky has reportedly parted ways with first-year offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.Īccording to WLEX-TV in Lexington, UK has elected to go a different direction after a disappointing 7-5 season that did not meet expectations. I would expect close games against Louisville and possibly Vanderbilt and UK can not come out flat out of the halftime again. Kentucky's production in the 3rd quarter must improve in the final 3 games of this season. Notice what you see there? 8 wins in those 9 games. Compared to the 17 games above, UK has scored 10 or more points in the 3rd quarter just 9 times:ġ0+ 3rd quarter points 2016: New Mexico State 2016: Mississippi St. UK has not gained momentum in the 3rd quarter very often under Gran. And I think you have to look at whatever adjustments on the offensive side of the ball not working as a key factor. UK would go on to lose 10 of those 17 games. Now, I was not a math major in college but I think it is impossible to expand a lead or make up any ground on a deficit if you don't score in a quarter. ![]() ![]() In 17 of those games, or over 1/3 of them, the Cats have been shut out in the 3rd quarter:Ģ018: Vanderbilt 2018: Missouri 2018: Louisville Eddie Gran has now been the offensive coordinator for 45 games against FBS opponents. Under Eddie Gran, that hasn't been the case far too often. After one half of football you would think that adjustments are made in each and every game and you will see improvements in the 2nd half. His program has brought us some amazing wins and we should accept the way things are done.īut I think there is something that has nothing to do with the conservatism and more to do with the "skill" of the coaches. It has probably benefited UK more than it has hurt us over the long run. But just where should the Gran-led offense be criticized the most? I am good with the conservative nature of the Stoops program. The loss to Tennessee followed a similar script to what we've seen too many times under the leadership of Stoops and the offense of Gran and that is missed opportunities, conservative mentality, and heartbreaking losses. This is gonna be a tough week for Mark Stoops and Eddie Gran.
